This year, for the first time, M2Tech will ehxibit at a CanJam, that is a show devoted uniquely to headphones, headphones amplifiers and ancillaries. I'm not totally new to this kind of events, as our Far East distributors usually attend at them since meny years, but I must admit that headphones were, for me, only a curious way to listen to music in an unnatural way.
But times are changing and we must keep this into consideration. Also customers change (thanks God!) and a generational turnover is taking place right now. Whereas older audiophiles were accustomed to listen to speakers as a mandatory setup to obtain the most realistic soundstage, younger music lovers have grown up listening to headphones (often earphones) driven by an MP3 player or a mobile phone with music playback capability.
As I forecasted some years ago, those boys are now becoming young men and want to improve the quality of their living, while keeping they habits as far as this is possible. This also means keeping listening to music by headphones, but with better quality than before.
Also, listening to headphones is a good way to enjoy music in places in which using speakers would be impossible (in open air, for example), or would bother other people (in a small home with babies who need to sleep oftenm for example).
Japanese audiophiles, often living in small homes with very thin walls, are used to headphones listening since many decades. This explains why headphones are a relevant part of the market in Far East since the beginning of hi-fi, and also explains why CanJams are common events over there.

Quest'anno, per la prima volta, M2Tech esporrà ad un CanJam, cioè ad una mostra dedicata esclusivamente alle cuffie, agli amplificatori per cuffia e corollari. Personalmente, per me questo tipo di eventi non è una novità, in quanto i nostri distributori dell'estremo oriente li frequentano da parecchi anni, ma devo ammettere che le cuffie sono sempre state, per me, uno strano modo per ascoltare musica piuttosto innaturalmente.
Ma i tempi cambiano, anche i clienti cambiano (per fortuna!) ed un cambio generazionale è in corso proprio in questo momento. Laddove gli audiofili più anziani sono abituati ad ascoltare musica attraverso i diffusori quale setup indispensabile per l'ottewnimento del soundstage più realistico possibile, i più giovani sono cresciuti ascoltando musica con cuffie (spesso intraurali) pilotate da un lettore MP3 o un cellulare capace di riprodurre musica.
Come avevo previsto alcuni anni fa, crescendo questi giovani desiderano migliorare la qualità della propria vita pur mantenendo le loro abitudini per quanto possibile. Questo significa anche continuare ad ascoltare musica con le cuffie, ma con una qualità superiore che non nel passato.
Inoltre, l'ascolto in cuffia è una ottima opzione qualora non sia possibile ascoltare tramite diffusori (per esempio all'aria aperta), o quando l'ascolto con diffusori potrebbe infastidire altre persone.
Gli audiofili giapponesi, che spesso vivono in piccoli appartamenti con pareti molto sottili, sono abituati all'ascolto in cuffia da parecchi decenni. Questo spiega perché le cuffie rappresentino una rilevante parte del mercato dell'alta fedeltà in estremo oriente fin dall'inizio dell'alta fedeltà, e spiega anche perché i CanJam siano eventi comuni in quelle nazioni.
