Disastro in Sardegna - Flooding in Sardinia

[English]

It’s a long time since my last post on my forum. This overly long absence is due to some problems related to the Company I had to face in the meantime, plus something a lot more important. For this reason, this post has nothing to do with M2Tech nor with more general technical or market topics.

On November 18th, a storm hit the island of Sardinia, my homeland, with a “bomb of water” which left more water on the ground than usually falls in 6 months. Almost all island suffered damages and causalties (16 up to now, and a shepherd who was rescuing his herd is still missing).

My family is lucky enough to live in Sassari, a town laying on the top of a hill. Many friends were less lucky: some of them had their home invaded by water up to 1.5-2m and their cars taken away by the flood.

Olbia, the main town of North-West county called Gallura and one of the main hubs for summer tourism travels, has suffered the worst: there are hundreds homeless people, families who lost everything, if not their lives. Water is missing due to extended damages to water pipes and sea water processing plants.

Sardinia is a very poor land. Their inhabitants are proud people who descend from one of the ancient “sea people” who fought Pharaons more than 4000 years ago, so they won’t ask you for any help. But they need it.

You can donate to contribute to their effort to get back their lives. If you’re reading from a foreign Country, you may feel too far from Sardinia to contribute, but it’s not like this: please take the time to visit this website (http://sardegna.blogosfere.it/2013/11/donazioni-alluvione-sardegna-ecco-come-fare-tutti-i-numeri-e-i-conti-correnti-utili.html) with a list of ways to donate. It’s in Italian but Google may help you to translate.

And if you think to go to Sardinia for vacations to spend some money there and help local economy, then please consider that most of the hotels, restaurant and holiday camps in famous tourism areas like Costa Smeralda are owned and managed by people and companies not residing in Sardinia. Then, you may prefer to go to one of the many B&B being opened in the inner part of the island or choose one of the “distributed hotels” with which people are trying to keep old villages alive. Please let your money you spend in Sardinia go to Sardinians to be spent and used in Sardinia.

[Italiano]

Upsampled Files and Native Hi-Rez files: Same Quality? - File Ricampionatui e File ad Alta Risoluzione Nativa: Stessa Qualità?

[English]

A few days ago, a customer wrote me to ask my opinion on why he couldn't hear any difference between an audio file produced at 44.1kHz/16bit and the same file upsamplet to 192kHz/24bit.
He thought that the upsampling process would improve the sound quality of the file.
While it could be marginally so when it comes to the way a DAC and its output filters work at different sampling rates, one thing must always be clear: upsampling doesn't add information nor improve the inherent sound quality of a file.

Upsampling means changing the sampling frequency of a file to a higher one. Typical is going from 44.1kHz to 176.4kHz. A side effect of this process is that the resulting new samples fit on a larger word than the original ones, so 44.1/16 generally translate into 176.4/24.

Does this mean that we have more information in the upsampled file than in the original one? No. Let's see why, discussing about bandwidth and resolution.

The original analog program has been heavily band-limited prior A/D conversion. Converting it @ 44.1kHz required band-limiting @ 20kHz or so. All information beyond that frequency were lost forever.

If we upsample, we just rearrange the original information to fit a denser sample sequence, but we don't (and we can't) add information Beyond 20kHz. In un upsampled file with 176.4kHz sampling rate originated from a 44.1kHz file, the power spectrum of the signal falls to zero beyond 20kHz, even if 176.4kHz sampling would allow for information contents up to 8.2kHz.

Same thing for 44.1kHz file originated from hi-rez masters: they were actually downsampled, with a digital filtering process prior downsampling to cut all excess band away. Results are same: all information beyond 20kHz are lost.

And the resolution? It remains the same as the original 16bit file, at best. This is because after A/D conversion, which implies quantization, the original signal is superimposed a noise, called quantization noise, which cannot be separated anymore from the original signal. Thus, when we upsample, we apply the process to both signal and quantization noise, resulting in a 16bit resolution signal represented on 24 bits.

Summarizing, upsampling won't improve the sound quality of the file, it will only allow the DAC to operate in more relaxed conditions with regards to bandwidth and resolution, probably leading to a marginal sound quality improvement.

[Italiano]

Marley Headphones Amplifier and the Advantage of Balanced Drive - Il Marley Headphones Amplifier ed i Vantaggi del Pilotaggio Bilanciato

[English]

Balanced drive means that a driver is driven by two power signals, one per polarity, in opposition to single-ended drive in which one polarity of the driver is connected to amplifier's ground. If we only had one driver to drive, the two modes would give same results, as the driver is a floating device with no electrical relationship with the electric earth nor other reference potential.

But things are different when it comes  to stereo headphones: in fact, we have two drivers which may (single-ended) or may not (balanced) share a common path for one polarity (usually negative one).

That common path is responsible for sound detriment, dynamic compression and crosstalk, due to the fact that the finite impedance of the common ground wire allows for signals coupling between left and right channel.

Balanced drive avoids all this by totally separating the signal path between left and right.

Balanced drive can be accomplished in two ways: balanced amplifiers (like in the Marley) or output transformers. The first method relies on using two stereo amplifiers, one driving the positive pole of each driver and the other driving the negative pole of each driver with a signal with reversed phase. The second method simply uses the intrinsic balanced layout of a transformer to "lift" the negative pole of each driver from the amplifier's ground.

Both methods have advantages and drawback. Tubes lovers would probably prefer a good output transformer, while those who look for detail and speed will go for balanced amplifiers.

A side effect of driving in balanced mode with balanced amplifier is a nearly total deletion of odd harminics and reinforcement of even harmonics. This is not always true with a transformer: if its primary is also driven by a balanced or push-pull circuit, then the same applies. A single primary winding transformer with one end connected to ground will not alter the harmonic spectrum.

Is the balanced drive more suitable for certain kind of transducers? No: both dynamic and electrostatic units in headphones will behave better when balanced-driven.

[Italiano]

Entrambi i metodi presentano vantaggi e svantaggi.

Facts Behind Marley's Great SNR - Il Segreto dell'Ottimo SNR del Marley

[English]

As told in my previous post, the new Marley Headphones Amplifier sports an impressive 120dB SNR. This is very useful in a headphones amp as even the slightest noise is well perceived when drivers are placed at half an inch from the ears.

How could we achieve this? In two ways: a low-noise amplifier design featuring ultra-low-noise input JFETS and low noise bipolar everywhere and very effective voltage regulators fro both positive and negative rails.

It's a fact that even the lowest-noise amplifier cannot fully exploit its full potential when the supply is noisy. Discrete components designs have a lower PSRR (Power supply Rejection Ratio) than integrated amps, so they can suffer of noise leaking in through the supplies. A really silent supply is the key to achieve the lowest noise possible from an amplifier.

[Italiano]

Unveiling the Marley (Just a Little Bit...) - Qualche Dettaglio sul Marley (Per Iniziare...)

[English]

The Marley Class-A Dual-Drive Headphones Amplifier, as the long name suggests, is a Class-A design. Audiophiles and DIY'ers know that Class-A gives sonic advantages over usual Class-AB, thanks to its high bias, but also makes designer face some challenges, first of all heat dissipation.
Those who visited the CanJam Europe in Essen and auditioned the Marley, could literally feel with their hand what this means: a unit running very hot.
The Marley dissipates around 30W idle, with a power capability of around 4W per channel on four channels (for experts: the figures just given let you understand that not all 4W are Class-A, but there is enough Class-A power to drive almost all headphones).
Class-A generally means more stability with respect to load's reactance, less intrinsic harmonic distortion, less distortion at low levels. These are all goals achieved in the Marley. Measured perfomances tell about 120dB SNR and 0.003% THD+N @ 2Vrms out. But this is about the whole signal chain, encompassing a bufferless integrated volume control before the amp. The power amp's actual performance are so better than the given figures, that the numbers actually reflect the volume control's performance.
The Marley amps use LSK170 ultra-low-noise JFET's on inputs and a design that exalts speed and detail. You will hear things, by the Marley, that no other headphones amp ever revelaed from your recordings. Just try it!

[Italiano]

Another Headphones Event Soon in Italy - Un Altro Evento Dedicato alle Cuffie Presto in Italia

[English]

Headphones are becoming more and more popular in Europe. A new event devoted to headphones will be held in beautiful Trieste on May 30-31th and June 1st, 2014. The event deserves to be visited even only for the great location: Pier 4 in the old port.

"Headphones to the People" (that's the name of the event) is organized by www.cuffiehifi.info, one of the most important italian blogs devoted to hifi.

Also very interesting is another idea from cuffieinfo people: "Cans in Concert", a mobile headphones showroom made on a Formula One truck to be parked in front of stadiums and arenas during popstars concerts next summer.

[English]

While at the CanJam Europe, I approached the German distributor for HiFiMan, discussing about their products. Headphones lovers know that HiFiMan makes some of the finest headphones ever, devices which trade quality for sensitivity, requiring as much as 5W on 50 Ohms to be properly driven.

We tried their HE-6 with the Marley Class-A Dual-Drive Headphones Amplifier prototype I was demonstrating there. Thanks to the 16Vrms that the Marley is capable of in balanced mode (equivalent to slightly more than 5W per channel), it was perfectly able to drive those challenging headphones.

[Italiano]

First Impressions from CanJam - Prime Impressioni dal CanJam

[English]

I'm writing from my hotel room in Essen, waiting to leave to the Koeln-Bonn Airport.
I spent te last two days behind a a table, demonstrating the new Marley Headphones Amplifier to a few enthusiast and discerning headphones lovers.
Very few, I must say, reviewers were more than visitors (it's not strange, as Germany has as many as 8 hifi magazines!), so the show was quite unlike the crowded trade fairs we are used to. Nothing to compare with similar Far East events.
But it was a very important first time and somebody had to do it in Europe. Kudos to Carsten Hicking from distributor company Higoto for starting it all.
Headphones listening is likely to be the main way to enjoy good quality music within a few years, when all music lovers will be young people used to listen to iPods and smartphones by headphones and looking for better quality.
Moreover, it's much easier to make up a high-end headphones system with 2,500€ than a classic speakers system. In times of crisis, this is overly important.
It seems that there will be a similar event in Italy pretty son, I'll give you more information in one of my next posts.

[Italiano]

M2Tech's First Time Ever at a CanJam - La Prima Volta di M2Tech ad un CanJam

[English]

This year, for the first time, M2Tech will ehxibit at a CanJam, that is a show devoted uniquely to headphones, headphones amplifiers and ancillaries. I'm not totally new to this kind of events, as our Far East distributors usually attend at them since meny years, but I must admit that headphones were, for me, only a curious way to listen to music in an unnatural way.

But times are changing and we must keep this into consideration. Also customers change (thanks God!) and a generational turnover is taking place right now. Whereas older audiophiles were accustomed to listen to speakers as a mandatory setup to obtain the most realistic soundstage, younger music lovers have grown up listening to headphones (often earphones) driven by an MP3 player or a mobile phone with music playback capability.

As I forecasted some years ago, those boys are now becoming young men and want to improve the quality of their living, while keeping they habits as far as this is possible. This also means keeping listening to music by headphones, but with better quality than before.

Also, listening to headphones is a good way to enjoy music in places in which using speakers would be impossible (in open air, for example), or would bother other people (in a small home with babies who need to sleep oftenm for example).

Japanese audiophiles, often living in small homes with very thin walls, are used to headphones listening since many decades. This explains why headphones are a relevant part of the market in Far East since the beginning of hi-fi, and also explains why CanJams are common events over there.

Next September 21th, we'll introduce our new headphones amp, the Marley Dual-Drive Class-A, a compact unit with many interesting features. We wait for you in Essen!

[Italiano]

Keep Up The Passion (Part 2): HiFi Lovers Become Exhibitors - Mantenere Viva la Passione (Seconda Puntata): gli Amanti dell'Alta Fedeltà Diventano Espositori

[English]

The Nuvistor Club is an italian association of DIY'ers and HiFi lovers based in Pisa (Tuscany). As the name of the association suggests, its members are mainly DIY'ers. They started organizing a small event devoted to DIY a few years ago. Their passion and the success of the first editions gave them more courage to expand the event scope to regular hifi, with ad hoc invitations to some italian manufacturers.

Last year, M2Tech was one of such manufacturers and the appreciation for her presence at the event led to another invitation for this year. It will be a "one shot" happening on November 17th, kindly hosted by the Politeama Theater in Cascina, a few kilometers away from Pisa towards Florence.

If you plan to come to Tuscany in November, then it could be a good idea to drop by Cascina on Sunday 17th.

[Italiano]

hiFace DAC: Never Enough! Yet Another Review - hiFace DAC: Mai Abbastanza! Ancora un'Altra Recensione

[English]

Another review on the hiFace DAC, this time from an Italian independent editor, creator of the webiste nuke.nonsoloaudiofili.com. Alfredo di Pietro, that's the name, writes a huge review starting from the basics of liquid music, to introduce the unique features of the hiFace DAC. The review is in italian, of course, but it's worth to be read through Google Translator. A "must" for all audiophiles, particularly those who are just approaching music files. You can read the review here: http://nuke.nonsoloaudiofili.com/M2TechhiFaceDAC38432/tabid/326/Default.aspx.

The hiFace DAC Strikes Again! A new Review on Audiostream - L'hiFace DAC Colpisce Ancora! Una Nuova Recensione su Audiostream

[English]

HiFi lovers know Audiostream, the on-line magazine from the same makers of Stereophile, devoted to computer audio and new technologies.

Audiostream has just published a rave review of the hiFace DAC, which you can read here: http://www.audiostream.com/content/m2tech-hiface-dac. The editor, Jason Serinus, is really happy with the hiFace DAC, stating that the difference in sound quality from his reference DAC which costs some 100 times more (!) than the hiFace DAC is so ridiculously small that makes him wonder about spending more than the cost of M2Tech's little jewel for any DAC!

[Italiano]

Italian User Write About the hiFace DAC - Un Utente Italiano Scrive una Recensione sull'hiFace DAC

[English]

One of our Italian users has kindly sent us a spontaneous review on the hiFace DAC. Needless to say that he's fond of the hiFace DAC. He uses the hiFace DAC in an all-Audio Tekne system. This fact, already, can be claimed as a pure heresy, nevertheless, he says that the hiFace DAC is capable of keeping the overall approach of the system, turning a test experience into listening pleasure.

It's very interesting when he says that the increase in resolution brigns to an apparent decrease of dynamic, to later realize that it's the distortion and the digital artifact to disappear, which are often exchanged for dynamic.

The writer closes stating that the hiFace DAC can kill (well, the word is not exactally "kill") a lot of more expensive competitors, particularly in systems in which tis implicit strenghts are duly highlighted.

You can find the review (in italian) in the italian section below: it is worth to use Google Translator to read it in your language.

[Italiano]

FUCK THE GIANTS
Gli anglofoni direbbero “you get what you pay for”.
La metto brutalmente: ho scollegato stadio phono e testina Audio Tekne e ho collegato l’hiFace direttamente all’integrato TFM-2000.
In the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady di Charles Mingus il carattere sonoro dominante era del tutto preservato.

New Reviews on hiFace DAC - Nuove Recensioni dell'hiFace DAC

[English]

I'd like to highlight two recent reviews about the hiFace DAC. One is from Earmass (http://earmass.com/2013/07/05/m2tech-hiface-dac-bring-good-musics-everywhere/), with a title that is absolutely perfect.
The other one is from Trulygadgets (http://www.trulygadgets.com/4670/gadgets/m2tech-making-music/). Both focus on the incredibly high sound quality from a DAC so small and cheap.
Earmass' Su says: "HiFace is actually really great for what it intended to, a portable DAC that you can bring it when you go with your laptop/net book."
The anonymous reviewer from Trulygadgets replies: "Like all high-end audiophile gear out there, the M2Tech HiFace DAC isn't cheap at $295, but it is a fair price for what you are getting. The components are top-notch, and there simply isn't a more capable DAC this size.".

[Italiano]

The hiFace DAC: What It Is and What It's Not - L'hiFace DAC: Cosa E' e Cosa Non E'

[English]

Some confusion has risen around the new hiFace DAC. Maybe due to the small size, recalling some competitors’ similar products with different features, and an unfortunate sentence in the introducing text on our website, immediately mirrored on many other specialized websites, people often don’t really get the real essence of the hiFace DAC. A few words are thus worth to dissipate any doubt.

The hiFace DAC IS a digital-to-analog converter to be used with a computer as digital source.

The hiFace DAC IS a high quality, line level output DAC to be hooked to preamps and amplifiers.

The hiFace DAC IS a cost-effective solution for budget-sensitive systems aimed at very good final results.

The hiFace DAC IS USB Audio Class 2.0 compatible. Thus, it needs NO DRIVERS under OSX and Linux.

The hiFace DAC CAN be hooked to an iPad (via the Camera Kit) or almost any Android tablet. However, some products (like the new iPad mini) haven’t sufficient current to power it. So, please do a test by your dealer before purchasing the hiFace DAC if hooking it to your tablet is your desire.

The hiFace has been designed mainly to be used as a classical desktop DAC. However, it MAY driver a headphones, provided its impedance is medium or high (say, more than 32 Ohms) AND its sensitivity is not too low. If one of these requirements are not met, you’ll get insufficient SPL and/or bad sound.

The hiFace DAC is NOT a headphones DAC. It may NOT correctly drive any headphones. If you have an Audez’e or a HiFiMan, then you need a dedicated headphones amplifier or another kind of DAC.

The hiFace DAC is NOT a cheap product. It’s been designed to deliver the best sound quality possible to a preamp or an amplifier for its price. This implies that it sounds better than many more expensive competitors. Do one thing only and do it well…

[Italiano]

L’hiFace DAC E’ compatibile USB Audio Class 2.0. Dunque, NON richiede driver sotto OSX e Linux.

Customers' Attitude to Purchase and Its Reflections on HiFi Companies Business - La Propensione dei Clienti all'Acquisto ed i Risvolti sul Business delle Aziende HiFi

[English]

HiFi customers are generally not educated buyers. During 80's and 90's they were compulsive buyers, changing equipment every few months and generating a warehouse rotation for dealers which led to huge used equipment stocks in shops. This, in turn, forced dealers to propose huge discounts on MSRP's to disencourage used equipment return, which created a bad habit amongst customers.

Sons of this scenario are customers from last decade, who pretended large discounts for each new purchase and went to Internet to find better prices, with no regard to the sales and after-sales service offered by expert dealers. As a consequence, many dealers closed or went to the 'net themselves, canceling any kind of support which was previously offered and paid by customers in the right price for each piece of equipment.

Purchasing at lower price on the 'net pays back in the short term, but revelas itself a boomerang in the medium and long term, when no warranty support is granted and often goods cannot be returned after listening to them in own system with unsatisfactory results. Even though international laws impose dealers to take back sold goods within at worst 7 days after delivery to the customer, few buyers now that or apply the rule and abandon HiFi for discontent, to turn their attention to other hobbies.

So we come to the present days and the global crisis: we're facing a small market mostly made of afraid customers who often don't know where to buy (no delaers in their area) and want to be sure that the unit they will eventually buy is the right one for them. Very often, also due to the technical development, they refrain to buy a certain unit, waiting for the next one. Of course this also applies to the latter, so they actually stop buying.

This is a real danger for HiFi companies, as they are already seeing their income reduced by the crisis and must accelerate their technical development pace in order to keep their competitivity. Small companies cannot afford the cost for that and either close or move to other markets, leading to a waste of "biodiversity" in HiFi world.

Is there a recipe to cure this uncomfortable situation? Not easy to say. For sure, companies should be very careful in keeping prices close to their MSRP all around the world and in both classic and on-line stores. Then, more attention to products' quality is necessary, to improve their commercial life and make buyers feel sure about the value of their purchase in time. As an example taken from another market, think about japanese bikes and BMW bikes: the formers lose value very quickly as every year a new model is released, while the latters keep well against the time and one can still sell a used R100 from eighties at a very high value.

[Italiano]

[English]

The June issue of the italian hifi magazine Audioreview (now in newsstands) sports a very positive review of the Vaughan by Marco Benedetti and Walter Gentilucci. The latter, in charge for measures, is quite clearly impressed by the instrumental performance offered by the Vaughan, particularly on the USB input, with an impressive 125dB dynamic range.

On his hand, Marco Benedetti, famous analog lover, claims that the sonic performance of our flagship DAC are very close to those of MSB Analog DAC, a machine costing at least twice the Vaughan, and very enthrilling. A great result for our company!

We'll put the scan of the article on line next Monday, if you're interested in reading it (in italian, of course) please look at Vaughan product page on M2Tech website.

[Italiano]

High resolution sound on an Android Tablet? Yes we can!

[English]

We recently did some experiments with an Asus Nexus 7 tablet using Android and some of M2Tech products. Thanks to an app called USB Audio Recorder Pro which, as the name suggests, is mainly a recorder but also offers some playback features, our engineer Pietro succeeded in playing back 192kHz tracks via both the hiFace Two and the hiFace DAC.

But what's more interesting is that, once a Joplin ADC was connected to the tablet, he was able to record up to 384kHz! This give more than a chance to people who want to make highest quality field recordings during concert or sessions: they only need a small and cheap tablet, a Joplin and a pair of microphones with a cheap phantom supply unit (ande, hopefully, a hiFace DAC to monitor the recording). Thanks to the excess gain available on the Joplin, no real mike preamp is necessary.

The special point is that no USB Audio Class 2.0 compliant driver was available on the tablet: the experiment succeeded thanks to a feature of the app: it includes a user space driver emulator, that is a piece of software which exclusively interfaces to the audio peripheral (this means that no other app can use this feature to in turn access the peripheral) without any need for kernel recompiling. This means that every tablet running Android 2.2, provided with a 2.0 USB port, can use hiFace Two, hiFace DAC and Joplin.

The app can be found on www.audio-evolution.com. It's not free, but I think that 5.49€ may be worth the pain (I have no interest in the company selling the product, nor am I paid to advertise the product).

[Italiano]

Need for Speed: the High Resolution Affair

[English]

M2Tech has, since her birth, offered products featuring very high resolution: 192/24 on her USB-to-S/PDIF converters, 384/32 on almost all her DAC's and on the ADC. Somebody has claimed it was only marketing hype, that there's no real need for such high resolution and, moreover, most systems work best with lower resolution.

I've personally address the topic on a white paper ('High Resolution Audio: Is It Really Necessary') which you can easily find on the internet as it's been mirrored by many distributors and retailers. For me, one can live happily without high resolution, nevertheless the inherent advantages of it are obvious at first listening.

The point, maybe, is another: how high the resolution must be to fully encompass all the nuances and details in a music program? Some people, for  instance, claim that 384kHz and 32 bits are a large excess with regards to the real perception capabilities of most listeners: with a theoretical bandwidth of 192kHz and a resolution of 194dB, we're ridiculously over the well-know limits of the human ear, 20kHz and 120dB.

That's true. What many critics miss, IMHO, is that when choosing such excessive figures, we're not addressing the listener needs, rather than the equipment limits. I'll use an example with cars to better explain. Suppose you need a car to drive for 100km on a road with 90km/h limit. A car allowing a maximum speed of 100km/h with gas sufficient for 105km would suffice... Wrong! You'll use the car to its maximum performance during all the travel and will likely run out of gas before reaching your destination or damage the engine. Not only: a car made to reach a peak speed of 100km/h will probably be difficult to drive at that speed and rahter uncomfortable, as its tires and shock absorbers are tailored to a smoother usage.

What I mean is that lower resolution systems will behave more poorly than higher resolution systems even with musical material which has inherent resolution way lower than the maximum allowed by the systems themselves.

A system designed to handle 384/32 will play 176.4/24 files better than another system made to cope with 192/24 at best. Think about recent CD player designs: almost all of them use DAC's made for 192/24, even if a CD is made for 44.1/16 music programs. Designers are not forced to use such DAC's: every IC manufacturer still offers at least one 48/16 or 48/20 DAC. The fact is that 192/24 DAC's sound better than 48/20 ones.

On the other hand, one is free to enjoy any kind of sound: even today some people prefer to listen to 78rpm records instead of LP's, and there is a general agreement that LP's sound better than 78rpm's. But personal tastes of a few people are not enough, according to me, to define a general rule.

Andrew Everard (What HiFi?) on hiFace DAC - Andrew Everard (What HiFi?) recensisce l'hiFace DAC

[English]

British journalist Andrew Everard (What HiFi? editor and also contributor for Gramophone) was the first to test the hiFace DAC right after the Munich High-End Show. You can read his review here: http://www.whathifi.com/blog/m2tech-hiface-dac-hands-on-review.
He was thrilled by the unexpected sound quality with regards to the hiFace DAC cost, enough to define hiFace DAC sound as 'fabulous'. Everard also suggests that the hiFace DAC is probably the most significant M2Tech product to date. We partially agree with him: how to forget the original hiFace? And the Young? Also, as a designer I always think that M2Tech most significant produt will be... next one!

[Italiano]

Keepin' Up Passion - Mantenere Viva la Passione

[English]

I've been recently interviewed by a kind italian gentleman who's moderator in some forums devoted to hi-fi: one is about headphones and related, the other is mainly about DIY. He also tested the hiFace DAC.

After answering to the questions, I thought about hifi and what's at its core: passion. As with all other hobbies, being them stamps collection or rapids riding, passion is at the root of it and passion must be kept alive if we want this enjoyable business to go on.

At first, I was very critic with forums: they're often more similar to soccer stadiums (at least in Italy) in which every and each discussion always degenerates to a fight and lawyers replace moderators. Too bad! A hobby is fun, not fight. There are other places to expel our inner rage: gyms, a boxe ring or a swimming pool.

As I say in the interview, I'm more a rugby fan than a soccer one: I like energic confrontation, but in full reverence for the other person.

Anyway, I must admit that forums are a real forge for passion: you can find real hifi lovers posting to them and the continuous practice of their hobby keeps heir passion alive. Even more: it burns it up. With this respect, Internet is giving a good help to hifi and this must be used by all hifi professionals to increase the widespread and appreciation of the good sound. Very carefully, of course!

If you're interested in the interview (in Italian), you can find a link to it, together with some comments, in this page: http://www.tforumhifi.com/t36940-intervista-all-ing-manunta-di-m2tech. Their review of the hiFace DAC (also in italian) can be found here, also together with comments: http://www.tforumhifi.com/t37053-recensione-hiface-dac?highlight=hiFace+DAC.

[Italiano]

A Brand New Start - Un Nuovo Inizio

[English]

I've been so busy these days that I couldn't find the time to update my blog. That's too bad, as the blog is a great way to communicate with customers and hifi enthusiasts. From now on, I'll do all my best to keep the blog updated on a daily basis. As usual, I'll try to post in both English and Italian.

I'll be glad should all my readers share the link to this blog with friends. I also suggest readers to register to have new posts notifications by e-mail.

I take the chance to announce the coming out of a lot of reviews on the new hiFace DAC. Our new little DAC is having a great success due to the great sound and value for money. In Italy, two reviews were published in May on Audio Review and Suono, and, more recently, a short review appeared two fridays ago on "Il Venerdi di Repubblica", a spinoff generalist weekly magazine from one of the most important italian newspaper.

You can find these reviews and many other (including some videos) on our website, in the product page for the hiFace DAC.

Have you already seen/tested the hiFace DAC? Do you like its orange color (Dutch friends can avoid answering: they must like it as orange is their national color ;-)? Please comment the post and give me your opinion!

[Italiano]

Avete già visto/provato l'hiFace DAC? Commentate il post e datemi il vostro parere!

Greece Likes M2Tech - Alla Grecia Piace M2Tech

[English]

It seems that Greece likes M2Tech products a lot. It may be the raving passion for M2Tech by our Greek distributor, it may be that M2Tech products meet Greek audiophiles needs... Either reasons, you can find two new Joplin reviews and one Vaughan review on our website. And they're all very positive reviews! Of course, they're in greek, so you will need a translator to get them into your language. But I think the contents are worth the pain: enjoy them!

[Italiano]

hiFace/Young/Vaughan and Squeezbox Touch - hiFace/Young/Vaughan e Squeezbox Touch

[English]

I've received a feedback from our Danish distributor about some users who got to connect the hiFace to their Squeezbox Touch. The process is quite not straightforward, as the hiFace (and Young and Vaughan which share the same base technology) are not USB 2.0 Audio Class compliant, thus it requires to recompile the Linux OS including the hiFace/Young/Vaughan driver and reinstall it into the Squeezbox. Not an easy task for non-programmers. Nevertheless, it may make sense for users who want to fully exploit the sonic potential of their Squeexbox by bpassing its digital output.
For more details, please go to:

[Italiano]

The new approach to the music market: will majors ever understand it?

[English]

Yesterday I searched the 'net for the new Steve Hackett's album, Genesis Revisited II. I wanted to download the music if possible. So I ran into Steve Hackett's website which is a real on-line shop: records, downloads, apparel, gadgets, concert tickets...
This is, in my opinion, an example of how the music biz should work today: in a time in which music can be "stolen" very easily, artists must find other ways to live from their music: concerts, memorabilia, public image rights from TV and radio... No way to get money from the music itself. It's like going back more than one century: before the invention of radio and discs, artists were paid to play live to audiences. Mozart (his father, actually) become rich wandering through Europe to give concerts in front of kings and princes. Now the audience is much larger and so are the opportunities for artists.
This is a concept most majors seem not able to understand: they still pretend to get money from CD's, DVD, SACD's, Blu-Rays... The major which will turn itself into a service provider for artists, organizing concerts and dealing with TV's and radios for public appearance of its artists will stay on the market, the others are going to die. It's breaking news that HMV is quitting all her shops in UK: 'Nuff said...
BTW: I finally purchased and downloaded the studio master FLAC's: 12 Pounds for two hours and half of great music @ 88.2/24: hi-rez is out there.

[Italiano]

[English]

I'd like to share with you this e-mail from a user from USA who owns both Joplin and Young and uses them to rip and reproduce vinyl:
"Marco,
After three months of The Young and The Joplin, I thought I would let you know how I operate your products.  Today I recorded a Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab recording of Santana's first album.  (I bought my first copy in the Winter of 1970.)  I recorded it at 384 kHz/24-bit in Samplitude.  I then moved it to my NAS server where I linked the individual tracks in a progrlam called Music Collector.  Music Collector is the database that contains a listing of much of my music. I have enclosed a screen shot of what Music Collector looks like when I selected the MSFL vinyl version of Santana 1.  The white triangles are where you can click to get either the whole album (top where I labled START) or individual tracks on the left to play in JRiver,  The next screen  shot is of JRiver Media Center.   I use WASAPI - Event Style.  Regular WASAPI does not work for me at all.  Kernal Streaming works but it has buffering issues which causes it to stop and then restart.  The techs at JRiver said to output at the highest bit rate that your DAC can handle so I set JRiver to 32-bit and I think it does make a big difference to play back any music to The Yound at 32-bits."
If you have similar experiences you want to share, please comment this post or contact me at m.manunta@m2tech.biz.

[Italiano]
